Avenues of Travel
OverlandNumerous well travelled roads cross the Vale of Meldegwyn, mostly following the path of the rivers, but also leading from the larger settlements to nearby passes. To the east and west out of the Vale, travel is restricted to the mountain passes, which are often completely impassable outside of the late spring to early fall. Western passesStaubige HügelThe Dusty Hills pass is the northern route through the western range of the Spine. It is only moderately used, for there are few settlements on it and it is at least three weeks travel to the next major town. Nonetheless, some of the largest caravans use this route because of it's low summit and lax tarrif enforcement.KristalldurchlaufThe southernmost pass through the western Spine is known as the Crystal Pass for both it's famously clear skies and the highly reflective icepacks that grace the mountaintops on it's north and south edges.Northern passZwergartiger WegKnown as Zwergartiger Weg, the Dwarven Route is an old and abandoned route throuth the northernmost end of the Vale. Exceedingly narrow and inhospitable, it is still watched by the dwarves who are ever vigilant for unmen invaders - be they coming from overland, or undermountain.Eastern passesEisfelddurchlaufEisfelddurchlauf, or "Icefield pass", is the northernmost pass through the eastern Spine. High, narrow, and bordered on by glaciers, it is a forbidding place, and would remain untravelled if it were not for Eisfelddurchlauf Fort which fills the pass from edge to edge at it's highest point.NiedrigerdurchlaufNiedrigerdurchlauf, or "low pass", is the central pass through the eastern Spine. A break in the mountains here is occupied by the sprawling fortifications of Hawkschnabelschloß (Hawk's Beak Castle). The pass is to low and broad to be completely sealed by the fortification, but the castle's position on the northern slopes provides it excellent visibility across the span of the pass, and multiple smaller fortifications hold sentries.WickelnderdurchlaufWickelnderdurchlauf, the "Winding Pass", is the southernmost pass through the eastern Spine. No fortifications block it, but several high and lonely watchtowers provide a relay from the city of Vadenhafen? at it's southeast end through to the cities of the Vale. Vadenhafen? itself is close enough to the end of the pass that it is felt that it serves to hold the pass secure.NavalDue to the ferocity of the weather on the Unfalwellen Ocean and the ever-present strong easterlies, naval travel is rarely used in the Duchy. There is a standard route westwards from Dergen? with merchant ships departing every two to three days, and an infrequent run eastwards to Niebburg?.AerialAvailable only to the extremely rich are the griffons of House Taddeuz, for hire from The Aerie to any of the larger cities of the Duchy - but at a minimum price of 500 Sovereigns, few use it. Still, to get to Vadenhafen? overnight can be worth it.MagicalRumors abound about a magical portal, usable by the Imperials to visit the Duke, and of another portal to one of the ruined cities in the Bloody Plains.Less fanciful magical means of travel can be found amongst the mages of the Duchy, including a pair of magical carpets and teleport spells - but these make the griffons look like bargains.
